Biographical SketchHans Buiter is writing a PhD thesis at the Eindhoven University of Technology. His subject is the transformation of the cityscape in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht from ‘wet towns’ into ‘dry cities’ by the implementation of underground sewers, the laying out of tramway lines, adopting these cities to the automobile and the filling in of many canals. He wrote several books and articles on urban subjects and the history of technology including Hoog Catharijne. De wording van het winkelhart van Nederland, Utrecht, 1993 (Hoog Catharijne, the development of the most prominent shopping mall in the Netherlands), Ouderijn. De geschiedenis van een verkeersknooppunt, Utrecht, 1996 (Ouderijn. The history of a traffic junction; written with Kees Volkers), The History of the power cable, Eindhoven, 1997, and a chapter on urban technology in the forthcoming part six of the series ‘Techniek in Nederland in de twintigste eeuw’ (Technology in the Netherlands in the twentieth century).
