Biographical Sketch

Marie-Emmanuelle Chessel, historian, is Chargée de Recherches, CNRS, at the Centre de Recherches Historiques, Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS). She received her PhD in 1996 from the European University Institute in Florence. She is author of La Publicité. Naissance d¹une profession (1900-1940) (Paris, CNRS-Editions, 1998) as well as co-author (with Fabienne Pavis) of Le technocrate, le patron et le professeur. Une histoire de l¹enseignement supérieur de gestion (Paris, Belin, 2001). Her general interest is in consumer society, marketing and the education of consumers in twentieth-century France, and her current research focuses on the history of French consumers leagues at the beginning of the twentieth century, including a comparative perspective with their American counterparts. As a visiting scholar, Chessel will be in residence at Center of European Studies (Harvard University) during the spring term 2003.
