New! Cycling Cities: Johannesburg

31 January 2020

The new book Cycling Cities: The Johannesburg Experience by Njogu Morgan has been published. This richly illustrated book traces the rise and fall of cycling in Johannesburg, which was once a genuinely cyclable city. This is a story of power, class, race—and mobility. Author Njogu Morgan brings to life the early days of cycling, when only elites owned and rode bicycles. Rooting his narrative in archival research, Morgan then tells the surprising history of cycling commuters in the pre-war city. We learn about the cyclist’s experience throughout the Apartheid era and decades of car-centric planning. Morgan defines the obstacles to overcome if Johannesburgers are to rebuild their city into a true cycling metropolis. There is an cogress about the book in South-Africa in February 2020.
